The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) awards 16 fellowships for PhD candidates to conduct field research in Latin America or the Caribbean for up to 1 year. Awards support 4 to 12 months of research. Fellows will contribute to grassroots development among disadvantaged people and attend a mid-year conference.
Stipend: A stipend of up to $20,000 to one researcher working over the course of 12 months in one or more of the 27 countries in the region where the IAF works
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a U.S. university. Students must have advanced to candidacy for a Ph.D. in the social sciences, physical sciences, technical fields or other disciplines as related to grassroots development issues in Latin America or the Caribbean. Proposals must be for research conducted in independent Latin American and Caribbean countries (except Cuba, Puerto Rico, or the Dutch, French and British territories). Applicants must speak and read the language(s) appropriate to the research. Each applicant must demonstrate at least one planned substantive collaboration during the field research period with a development or applied research institution in the Latin American or Caribbean country of the research. Applications for clinical research in the health field will NOT be considered. Foreign Language Proficiency Report. IAF applicant certification. 3 academic references. University certification.
