Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) alumni may apply to Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) for awards toward a biomedical PhD for 3 years. Each fellowship will support students for up to three years of their dissertation research, typically in years three, four and five of their PhD studies. The Institute’s science education programs support initiatives with the power to transform education in the life sciences for all students.
Stipend: Each student-advisor pair receives an annual award of $53,000 for up to three years
Applicants will come from these 2 groups: 1) Alumni of HHMI’s Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP). 2) Students nominated by T32 predoctoral training grant (non-MSTP) principal investigators (PIs) supported by the National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Applicants come from racial, ethnic, and other underrepresented groups in the sciences, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants must be in their 2nd or 3rd year of a PhD program in the life sciences or related sciences. Must have identified a thesis advisor. Must have advanced to candidacy before appointment. Educational history. Transcripts. Publications. Dissertation research plan. Leadership statement. 3 letters of recommendation, which includes a letter from the PhD adviser and a letter from a scientist. Students who are enrolled in an MD/PhD (eg, Medical Scientist Training Program) program are not eligible.
