Language – the shades and shapes of words, the choices made, the truths touched – was central to the life of David Bernstein. He grew up in the southern suburbs, was awarded the state English award when he graduate from high school, attended Yale University as a Yale National Scholar until illness forced his withdrawal, and was graduate from Roosevelt University with its Phelan Fellowship for graduate study. His literary interest focused on critic and poetry; he was also a talented pianist and a Chicago Cubs fan. David died in 1972 at the age of 24; his parents endowed this scholarship in his honor.
