Benefits

The scholarship covers all college and university tuition fees for one year of graduate study in a STEM field at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. Students also receive a living stipend, an allowance of up to $1,500 for travel to the United Kingdom, and the possibility of a special research grant of up to $2,000.

Requirements

  • Citizen of the United States, either native born or naturalized
  • Senior enrolled in one of the institutions participating in the Scholarship Program or a student who has recently graduated from one of those institutions.
  • Upon taking up the Churchill Scholarship, a scholar must hold a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent, and may not have attained a doctorate degree.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.8 recommended
  • Extensive research experience recommended

Interview Dates and Process

  • Outstanding academic achievement. There is no minimum GPA, though most applicants have a very high average. The Committee looks at achievement in STEM courses, especially in the major, as indicated by course grades and recommendation letters.
  • Proven talent in research. Science and engineering applicants will demonstrate extensive laboratory experience, internships, or related work, while applicants in mathematics will show substantial independent work or other projects. The Committee looks for originality and creativity.
  • Outstanding personal qualities. Understanding the time commitment required by research, the Churchill Foundation does not seek so-called “well-rounded” applicants; instead, it seeks applicants with interesting “jagged edges.” The Committee takes into account interests and achievements outside of research, but it does not favor any particular kind of activity.
