The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) annually awards up to 35 doctoral and postdoctoral scholars for research in India for up to 9 months. Fellows will establish research and affiliation at an Indian institution. Junior Research fellowships are available to doctoral candidates for 6 to 11 months and enables fellows to pursue their dissertation research in India. Senior Research fellowships are available to scholars with a PhD or its equivalent for up to 4 months (short-term awards) or 6 to 9 months (long-term awards).
Stipend: Those who are awarded NEH-funded fellowships will receive generous stipends of $5,000 per month.
Application will be judged on the following basis: The project description. The candidate’s academic and/or professional record. The quality of 3 letters of references. Project statement no longer than 6 pages, with a bibliography. CV no more than 2 pages. Applicants for the Junior Research Fellowship must include official transcripts. Applicants for the Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowship must provide a web-based link to some significant sample of their work. Those fellows selected in the fellowship competition will be able to carry out their fellowships at a time of their choosing, starting a year later than the application due date. Applicants must include a copy of the first page of the passport and any Indian visa stamps in current passports.
