Kress awards 6 predoctoral fellows to carry out European art history research for 2 years in Europe. These research fellowships allow advanced graduate students to pursue doctoral research in art history and archaeology in one of the European art history research centers. Young art historians will be able to immerse themselves in related research. The research centers are located in Florence, Leiden, London, Munich, Paris, and Rome. Research for a shorter period of time is also possible. Each university is limited to two nominees per academic department. The nominees must be applying for different research centers.
Stipend: Per annum: $30,000. The Foundation requires its funding be allocated toward direct costs only.
Restricted to pre-doctoral candidates in the history of art and related disciplines. Candidates must be nominated by their academic department. Dissertation research must focus on European art from antiquity to the early 19th century. 5-page summary of the proposed dissertation research project, with an annotated bibliography, proposed research plan, budget, and work completed. A brief description of any previous research and travel experience abroad. A list of languages in which you are proficient and to what extent. A CV. Final transcripts from where applicant received their MA. 3 sealed letters of evaluation, 1 must be from the chairperson of the academic department who nominated the applicant.
