The German Studies Association (GSA) supports 1 year of research for PhD students and recent postdoctorals to research, present, and study in Berlin, Germany. Berlin Program is a residential program that combines research opportunities with intellectual and cultural interaction. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research as well as postdoctoral research which leads to completion of a monograph. A colloquium will serve as a central meeting point for all fellows to share, discuss and support each other’s work. Fellows will present their work at the colloquium, and other conferences and workshops in Europe. The program's mission is to contribute to the training of a new generation of young North American scholars specializing in Germany and Europe and to deepen the understanding of German and European political, economic, social and cultural developments in North America.
Stipend: Stipends are EUR 1400 per month for fellows working on dissertation and EUR 1600 per month for fellows working on postdoctoral research. In addition, the program reimburses costs for transatlantic travel up to a maximum of EUR 1200.
Dissertation applicants must have completed all course work and exams, and be ABD (all but dissertation). Postdoctoral applicants must have received a PhD within the last 2 years. Open to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines. Research proposal. Applicants should explain why an extended period of research in Berlin is critical to the successful completion of their proposed research project. Should show language fluency adequate to complete the project and participate in the seminar at the Freie Universität Berlin, which is conducted in German.
